International Ecological Engineering Society (IEES), Switzerland:
The International Ecological Engineering Society (IEES) is a NGO uniting private persons and organizations dealing with ecological engineering and related topics. It was established in 1993. The aims of IEES are to disseminate ecological engineering oriented knowledge and to promote implementation of ecological engineering projects. Ecological engineering provides a framework for sustainable environmental technology development: Ecosystem based design, system integration (social, economical and ecological), waste-to-resource thinking, multi-functionality and the utilization of renewable energy define the baseline for ecological engineering.
Main role in the project
IEES was the leader of the first Work Package, giving a contribution to the development of criteria for evaluation and systematisation of conventional and innovative low cost sanitation technologies. The identification of technical requirements for large-scale implementation for each selected technology, in the West African context, was of the responsibility of IEES.
