Day 4. Field trip

Sabtenga - ECOSAN UE Ouagadougou project and the Kossodo Wastewater treatment and reuse plant

Organisers:

Mr. Linus Dagerskog, ECOSAN program, Burkina Faso

Dr. Halidou Koanda and Mr. Anselme Vodounhessi, Centre Regional pour l'Eau Potable et l'Assainissement à faible cout (CREPA), Burkina Faso

The field visit concerned three sites related to reuse oriented sanitation in and around Ouagadougou. The first visit was to a village called Sabtenga which is one of the pilot sites for CREPA´s ecological sanitation program. This was an excellent occasion to exchange with the villagers and to see some of the UD toilets built there. Then, the participants visited an Ecosan project that is being implemented since June 2006, setting up a close-loop system in 4 out of the 30 urban sectors of the city. A great number of UD toitets have been built and about 500 urban farmers have been involved in training on reuse of ecosan fertilisers. Finally, the field trip ended in Kossodo wastewater treatment plant which treats the water of the central city town and the whole industrial park of Ouagadougou. Nearly the 25% of the treated water is reused by the urban farmers located along the plant.
