Description of the Workshop organised by BOATA
Prepared by Waltraud Keipp
The NETSSAF workshop held in Zinder, Niger, was a one day affair. The workshop was organised in a partnership by BOATA and the “National School of Public Hygiene” based in Zinder. In total 25 persons participated in the workshop: 5 mayors; 3 municipal counsellors; 4 NGOs; 3 members of the National School of Public Hygiene; 1 technical advisor; 3 participants from the ministry of health; 1 participant from the ministry of agriculture; 1 participant from the Ministry of Water; 3 members of agricultural cooperatives; 1 municipal employee.
The workshop concentrated on the presentation of NETSSAF and its results, particularly on the need to plan sanitation as a whole system, aspects of solid waste management and reuse of sanitation products. Furthermore a local planning process was initiated. However it was felt that one day is by large insufficient to start a real planning process. To enhance the planning process, a follow-up workshop will be organised in June with the same participants, who should a real interest.
