1. Introduction
On Tuesday the 1st and Wednesday the 2nd of April, Ville de Sya (NETSSAF Partner) held two workshops (WS) for the locality of Dogona as part of the activities of task 8.2 of NETSSAF. The first WS was to address the end users, while the second was aimed at the authorities.
The minutes from these workshops are presented, while the general report which is now being compiled will give more details about the output of the WS.
2. Objectives and Expected results
2.1 Objectives of the Workshop
For the end users
§ Inform the end users about NETSSAF initiative
§ Sensitize them about sustainable sanitation
§ To know their preferences concerning reuse
§ To know the different actors which can contribute for the Implementation
2.2 Expected results
For the end users
§ Ends users are informed about NETSSAF Project
§ They are sensitize on sustainable sanitation
§ They have expressed their preferences concerning waste reuse
§ They have identified the different actors who can contribute for the implementation of the related sanitation systems
3. Highlights
· Who Participated at the WS?
We were actually satisfied with the mobilization observed at these WS as all participants who were invited were present. Without mentioning the member of the organization committee and the communicators, the attendance was as follows.
For the WS of end users, 29 persons were invited and the attendance was 33 persons for the authorities, 28 persons were invited and the attendance was 28 persons
Representatives from the media were also present:
- l’express du FASO
- le Sidwaya ( Governmental news paper)
- liberation
Activities of the WS were consequently published in the following days
Who was our NETSSAF Expert?
Dr. Simeon KENFACK provided support as an expert from NETSSAF. Much known in the locality as he had previously coordinated and led some projects in that area in the account of CREPA (such as UN-HABITAT, REFAID…) he knew the appropriate message which could bring the participants on board. He kept on drawing their attention on NETSSAF approach. He was accompanied by a Sociologist expert of CREPA
Translation
The WS with end users went on entirely in the local language. The presentation from the NETSSAF Expert was conducted in French, but duly translated at the same time in the local language. The other speakers made their presentation directly in the local language (Djula), with the working group also being held in the local language. This helped the participants to adequately understand what the NETSSAF initiative is all about, as this was the aim of the WS, particularly what was expected from them.
Technical sessions
The WS agenda had 2 technical sessions. The first one was reserved to presentations followed by debates, while the other was solely dedicated to the working group activities. The presentation of Ms Leocardie BOUDA (Sociologist Expert in CREPA) on Participatory Approach caught the attention of all participants (both end users and authorities), as she demonstrated why there was an urgent need to shift from the conventional system of sanitation to sustainable sanitation, regarding all the advantages generates by the sustainable options, in terms of health, environmental impact and economic incomes.
This can be said to be the reason why all participants agreed to contribute for the implementation and dissemination of the appropriated sustainable sanitation systems.
WS Evaluation
At the end of the first session, evaluation forms were distributed to all participants, with the Chairman clearly explaining to them how to fill the form and with precise instructions to return the form at the end of the workshop. These evaluations forms will be examined and the results will be provided in the final report.
· Organization of the Working groups
Participants were divided into 3 working groups
G1: Solid waste
G2: Wastewater
G3: Excreta
In order to ensure proper coordination, moderators were selected to lead the activities in each group. Ville de Sya municipality as key actor led 2 groups for both end users WS and authorities WS. Others experienced people in the field of waste management and hydraulic engineering also gave their support. Each group however had the opportunity to choose among themselves a representative.
4. Example of Terms of References (ToR) for the Working Groups
The ToR were elaborated as follows:
Þ An introductive part
A brief, remind of the main characteristics of a sustainable sanitation system
Þ The Tasks
For the authorities, it started by:
This is what the Ends users’ prefer in term of sanitation reuse products. (Here, we distributed the output of end users working groups of the previous day.
For participants of the Solid waste group (G1), we gave them the output of the end users working group of that very subject. It was the same for others groups)
Five questions were to be addressed.
1. How can these preferences of ends users de feasible?
2. In addition of their preference, at which others reuse products do you think.
3. Which aspects shall be Important to integrated to their preferences
(Socio-cultural, Law and Norms, economical, Technical…)
4. Who are the potentials actors and their roles?
5. Fill the following steps for a better involvement of these actors
