The purpose of the workshop was to introduce participants to the various aspects of ecological sanitation and how best it could be applied in Ghana.

 

The chairman for the occasion Professor J.H. Ephraim, who is the Dean of Graduate Studies, welcomed the participants to the workshop and assured them that at the end of the workshop they would have learnt a lot on the various aspects of ecological sanitation which could be used to solve the numerous sanitation problems in their various communities.

 

 

In an opening, address Professor Aboagye Menyeh, Provost of the College of Science, acknowledged the efforts made by lecturers, teachers, researchers and consultants of environmental sanitation geared towards the reduction of sanitation problems in the country through innovative and sustainable approaches.

 

 

He added that by adapting ecological sanitation principles, our river bodies will remain clean and safe to use, monies will be saved, and the environment protected through re-use of plant nutrients as valuable fertilizer to restore soil fertility.

Prof Aboagye Menye implored the participants to use the platform provided by the workshop to discuss how best the sanitation in our cities could be improved, thereby reducing the health risks associated with poor and unsustainable sanitation approaches.

 

 

He expressed appreciation to the European commission for their continuous support of this regional project.

 

 

Facilitators for the workshop were, Professor R. C. Abaidoo, Department of Theoretical and Applied Biology of KNUST, Dr J. A. Bakang, Department of Agriculture Economics, Agricbusiness and Extension of K.NUST and Dr Amah Wutse of Centre Régional Pour L’Eau Potablé et L’Assainissement (CREPA) Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.

 

 

Participants came from all over the country.
