ROSA (Resource-Oriented Sanitation concepts for peri-urban areas in Africa)
The UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs, target 10) call for halving the proportion of people without access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation by 2015. ROSA promotes resource-oriented sanitation concepts as a route to sustainable and ecologically sound sanitation in order to meet the MDGs.
These concepts shall be applied in four cities in East-Africa, namely Arbaminch (Ethiopia), Nakuru (Kenya), Arusha (Tanzania) and Kitgum (Uganda).

AFRICAN WATER
African Water is a support action funded by the European Commission to increase the involvement of Africans in European water research. The "African Water" SSA is one component in the delivery of major EU commitments to strengthen African water research capacity.
More specifically this SSA underpins the delivery of water specific commitments made at the Johannesburg WSSD and UN 12th Commission on Sustainable Development (New York 2004), and thus is an integral part of the EU Water Initiative, to deliver research capacity building in Africa.

Improving the Water Supply in Eastern and Volta Regions
Neither the quantity nor the quality of the drinking water available to the townsfolk of the Volta and Eastern Regions was satisfactory. Existing supply systems were in poor condition. The hygiene situation was critical. The population in the selected regions has a steady and sufficient supply of hygienic drinking water. Sanitation and hygiene have markedly improved. Water supply plants are being maintained on a decentralised and sustainable basis and are covering their own costs.
