D03: Multidisciplinary criteria for the evaluation and classification of peri-urban and rural settlements with no access to improved sanitation

In this paper a brief introduction to the rural and peri-urban areas of West Africa is given. A criteria of evaluation of human settlements is proposed, in which demographic, social, economical, climatic, among other factors are considered. Furthermore, this document presents a possible classification of rural and peri-urban areas, giving as a result 6 different types of settlements for each condition.

The general objective of this report is describe the final conference which aimed to bring together members of the NETSSAF consortium jointly with national and regional decision makers, sanitation professionals, practitioners and scientists to present the results of the Coordination Action and discuss future trends and directions concerning the large scale implementation of sustainable approaches of sanitation in rural and peri-urban areas in West Africa.
