In this paper a brief introduction to the rural and peri-urban areas of West Africa is given. A criteria of evaluation of human settlements is proposed, in which demographic, social, economical, climatic, among other factors are considered. Furthermore, this document presents a possible classification of rural and peri-urban areas, giving as a result 6 different types of settlements for each condition.

A deep review of the conditions in prevailing in West Africa is given, including a review of the living conditions of people in urban and peri-urban areas.
