WELCOME TO THE NETSSAF WEBSITE

NETSSAF "Network for the development of Sustainable Approaches for large scale implementation of Sanitation in Africa", was a coordination action that started in June 2006 and was sponsored by the European Commission. Its objectives included the coordination and integration of current scientific researches and technological innovations in Africa, solely for the creation of synergies to support large-scale implementation of sustainable sanitation systems in peri-urban and rural areas. The aim of NETSSAF was thus to propose feasible solutions for the achievement of the Sanitation Millennium Development Goals in Africa.

In order to cover the various aspects of Sustainable Sanitation, the NETSSAF activities and partners were divided into 8 different Work Packages (WP), covering all related issues and to be capped with the organising of an international conference which was carried out in September, 2008 titled "Pathways towards Sustainable Sanitation in Africa" (For more information about the Final Conference, click here).

The Work Package activities are already completed and you can have more details by clicking on each of the following WP's name:

WP1 called as "Definition of evaluation criteria", started at the beginning of the project and its aim was to define the necessary evaluation criteria for the future activities to be performed during the course of the project.

WP2 was titled as "Regional evaluation and classification in typical settlements" and its objective was to collect and systemise relevant information regarding the current sanitation, social and institutional situation of peri-urban and rural areas in West Africa.

WP3 titled the "Assessment of sanitation technologies" was devoted to the assessment of the existing low conventional sanitation options and the innovative sanitation technologies.

WP4 named as "Identification of potential sustainable sanitation technologies", started once the socio-economical characteristics and existing needs of typical cases were identified in WP2 and a throughout evaluation of the sanitation technologies were perfomed.

WP5 titled the "Regional identification of possible sanitation providers and actors" was elaborated to develop an effective sanitation market information system.

WP6 was called "Adapted sustainable sanitation management system" and represented the key figure to complete NETSSAF goals, due to it merged the results obtained in the previous four (4) work packages.

WP7 titled as "Coordination of research, technology development and cooperation", worked to identify the research and development institution throughout the West African region in order to map the research activities that have been perfomed in the field of sustainable sanitation in rural and peri-urban areas.

WP8 named as "Sustainable sanitation extension and dissemination programme", reached four (4) different targeted audiences: local communities, local and national authorities, specialise scientific community and the general public, all of them interested on the sanitation field.
